Our Story

Mothers’ Union in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, is a member organization of the international
Christian Charity organization that was started in England in 1876 by Mrs. Mary Sumner. The charity has
flourished to 4 million members in 84 countries worldwide. Mary Sumner’s objective was to support
mothers as they brought up their children as Christians.
The unique quality of the Mothers’ Union is, its members work as volunteers in local communities,
putting their faith into action by acts great and small, giving individuals in need a helping hand and
enabling communities to have the confidence and skills to transform their lives in a sustainable way.
Mothers’ Union Southern Africa was launched in 1904 with the first Branch in the diocese of
Bloemfontein [Free State]. MU Southern Africa exist in six countries namely, South Africa, Lesotho,
Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Angola. In the 29 dioceses that makes up the Anglican Church of
Southern Africa, Mothers’ Union exist in 28, with a membership of over 63, 000.
